Trips to Israel.
Don’t tell anyone, but being a counsellor (madrichol) is way more fun than being a camper. Not least of which because you get to meet fellow Shomrimot (members of Hashomer Hatzair) from around the world. Here are a few of the trips we lead:
Yedid: Yedid is for our counsellors-in-training (Grade 10) to take the second half of their summer and go to Israel. In this program, they are joined by their Liberty kvutza (from the sister camp in NY) and other Shomrimot from around the world. The trip represents the end of a yearlong process and marks the beginning of their experience as a counselor and leader in the movement.
Shnat: Shnat is a gap-year program that is open to our alumni after they complete high school. Shomrimot from all around the world participate. The program offers the opportunity to actually live in Israel and embed into the fabric of Israeli society. It's a chance to live a drastically different lifestyle, practice speaking Hebrew, and gain deeper insight into the many challenges that Israeli society faces.
Mifgash: Mifgash is for our counsellors. It is a week-long trip organized by the alumni community. It's our way of ensuring the our Shomrimot have a way to stay connected to the world movement and keep their connection to Israel alive. Not to mention, it's super fun.
Birthright Taglit: This is not the normal Birthright experience. Hashomer Hatzair and Habonim Dror come together to provide an alternative experience for anyone interested in actually understanding Israel’s complex sociopolitical landscape. You will encounter many diverse perspectives and work with organizations championing peace and a just Israeli society.

Heart to Heart.
This incredible program brings a group of twenty teenagers to camp every summer for three weeks; half of whom identify as Palestinian citizens of Israel, and the other half as Jewish citizens of Israel.
Daily activities include team-building workshops, camping trips, and facilitated dialogue about the narratives, politics, and power dynamics that participants face in their daily lives at home. The group also visits Parliament Hill in Ottawa, and spends four days living with Canadian host families while touring Toronto. The group's presence at camp has become a meaningful and central addition to the experience of all of Camp Shomria's Canadian campers. The ability to witness shared society building and be in the presence of teens from Israel contributes to important discussions and conversations that our campers engage in while at camp and builds lasting friendships and connections between the Camp Shomria campers and the Heart to Heart participants.
Heart to Heart equips its many program alumni with newfound perspectives and skills and the motivation they need to determine for themselves what a solution may look like, as well as how they can continue contributing to it.
Heart to Heart was founded in 2011 as a partnership between Camp Shomria and the Givat Haviva Education Foundation in Israel.
