Orlee cannot wait to get back to Camp Shomria for yet another unforgettable summer - and let me tell you, this summer is going to be AWESOME!
Education: Orlee is currently graduating from York University with a BFA in Film Production.
Previous Camp Experience: This will be Orlee's NINTH summer at Camp Shomria. Orlee has filled a variety of roles within the movement at Mosh Choref, Mosh Kayitz and then Ken - from Madricha for both upper and lower chanichim, to Rosh Tarbut (programming) for the Ken, to her previous Hanagah experience as Rosh Tech (logistics). Having filled a variety of different roles, Orlee is very excited to have the opportunity guide the Hadracha (staff) as they venture along their own Hashomer journey.
Favourite Camp Memory: On the last night of camp in Tzofim Gimmel (Grade 9) our Madrichim ran a Peula for us in the magical field of dreams - a place where after 6 years of being in Hadracha I am still unable to find! We sat in the tall grass and shared memories of our amazing summer - I couldn't imagine being part of another kvutza! Thinking back to that moment, and that summer is still a nostalgic memory for me!
ROSH TARBUT - Head of Programming Anna Beausoleil Shapiro
Education: Anna is currently in her first year at the University of Toronto studying Classics and Archaeology.
Previous camp experience: Anna first attended Camp Shomria as a camper in 2007. Hesitant at first, it was not long before she felt at home with her kvutza (age group). Now returning for her sixth year, Anna will the Rosh Tarbut (creative director) alongside Mattan Lustgarten. Anna is bubbling with excitement to fill the role and plan all sorts of activities for the campers.
Favourite camp memory: Anna remembers the singing and dancing that accompany shabbat as the fondest of her camp memories.
ROSH TARBUT - Head of Programming Mattan Lustgarten
Education status: Mattan is in his second year of the Kinesiology program at Queen’s university.
Previous camp experience: This will be Mattan’s 12th summer at Camp Shomria. He is currently a madrich for the yedid kvutza and was Rosh Chinuch at camp last summer.
Favourite camp memory: Mattan’s favourite camp memory dates back to Mosh Kayitz 2007 when his Tzrif (cabin) made camp history by winning Bikur (Friday afternoon cabin cleanliness competition) for the twelth week in a row (yes, they won all six weeks in 2006 as well).
ROSH CHINUCH - Head of Education Mira Taichman
Mira Taichman just graduated high school, and one of these days, she will figure out where she is going to university. She is thrilled to be returning for her 7th summer at Mosh as Rosh Chinuch!
Previous Camp Experience: For the last two years, Mira has been a Madricha for several different kvutzot, ranging from grades five to eight. She also has attended winter camp as a grade nine Madricha. Mira is ridiculously excited to be Rosh Chinuch this summer, and to coordinate educational programming for the entire camp. Mira spends way too much time counting down the days until Mosh, and looking back on all her fond memories at Shomria.
Favourite Camp Memory: Tiyul, our three day camping trips, stand out particularly strongly, as does a particularly epic water balloon fight that once took place on the hottest day of July.
Mira can’t wait to get back to Mosh to experience another extraordinary summer!
ROSH TECH - Head of Logistics Miriam Schachter
Miriam is super excited to be attending her SIXTH summer as staff and her THIRTEENTH summer overall at camp Shomria this year! Like most feel about camp, Shomria continues to be one of the most important places and events in Miriam’s life... she just can’t seem to get enough. Miriam has filled many positions from a counselor for our youngest group (grade 3) to a Yedid leader last summer, taking our oldest campers (Grade 10) on their summer long leadership program and Israel trip. She has also run the arts and crafts program, worked as a member of the Tarbut team (programming) at our yearlong ken, and most recently was camp director and head of staff at our 2011 winter camp.
She is eager to take on her new position this coming summer as head of tech and logistics!
A little bit more about Miriam... Miriam currently lives and works in Toronto. She studies architectural design at the University of Toronto and continues to be involved in Hashomer Hatzair activities.
Favourite Camp Memory... Although there are far too many memories to pick just one, Miriam fondly looks back on all the times she spent on a canoe during camp. Not only did camp train her strongly on canoeing skills but all the hours spent in a canoe allowed for some of the best talks with friends. With nothing but the open water and trees around you, it is easy to find yourself having some truly great and unique moments! Miriam also cherishes the many hilarious times with her friends. These memories are what formed the amazing friendships she shill holds onto today!
MASKIRA - Head of Year Round Activites Ariel Sernick
Ariel is beyond excited to get back to her home away from home, Camp Shomria for an amazing summer. This will be Ariel's 11th Summer overall and her 5th summer as staff. Over her 5 years she has filled a plethora of different positions ranging from the youngest campers (grade 3) to the oldest (grade 10)
Ariel currently lives in Toronto. She goes to U of T where she is an Aboriginal Studies student. She currently holds the position of Maskira (loosely translated as coordinator of youth-leading-youth programming throughout the year). As a result Ariel is very involved with Hashomer Hatzair year round. She will be a member of the Hanhaga (leadership body) this summer but also looks forward to having another job at camp and getting back to what we do best; giving kids the best summers of their lives.
Ariel has so many memories from camp but her favourite is a canoe trip her and her kvutsa (age group) went on during their Tzofim Gimmel (grade 9) summer. This trip was full of good times and struggles but there is nothing more empowering than overcoming obstacles with your closest friends.
